The Sweetness of God’s Word | June 1st, 2021
It was the perfect day for a walk by the lake. The assortment of colors in a nearby field of wildflowers was absolutely breathtaking! As I took a closer look at the extraordinary detail on the petals, I noticed a hardworking bee in the center of one of these beauties.

Honey bees rely on their sense of vision to locate flowers. The more colorful the flower petals, the more attractive they are to the bee. Some petals even have shiny patches of ultraviolet light that humans can only see by using special equipment. Like airport runway lights, these ultraviolet patches are called “bee guides” to steer them straight to the sweet nectar.
Our sweet nectar is God’s Word, filled with wisdom and discernment to give us all we need to navigate successfully in a world full of lies and confusion. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, we are given the Holy Spirit as our Guide to teach us the truth from His Word. He gives us special equipment – spiritual eyes – so we can see and comprehend the truth. The more we read it, the more we savor its sweetness. We begin to have a craving for it. Nothing else can compare!
The Holy Spirit also teaches us how to live in a way that keeps us from harming ourselves. His instruction for life is like sweet, pure honey. The more we follow His guidance, the more we find ourselves loving what is true, right, pure, and praiseworthy because that is what He loves. It brings vitality to our soul!
The nectar from flowers sprayed with pesticides can be very harmful, resulting in impure honey or even death to the bee if too toxic. When we allow impurities that fight against God’s standard of what is true, right, pure, and praiseworthy to enter our minds or become acceptable to us, it can become toxic to our relationship with Christ. When we sit there and watch the filth on television that celebrates sin, get involved in sexual immorality, or give in to unhealthy addictions, it deeply grieves the Holy Spirit. He knows how much it can hurt us, perhaps even resulting in death.
When we are obedient and have a desire to please God, He will provide all the power we need to overcome temptation for anything impure. Like the colorful petals on a wildflower, that which is true, right, pure, and praiseworthy will be as attractive to us as nectar to the bee. His Word is sweetness to our soul!
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Psalm 119:103-104
