Spiritual Vision with Dragonfly Eyes | August 24th, 2021

A shiny iridescence caught my eye on my walking path the other day. Upon closer examination, I noticed it was a beautiful dragonfly that perhaps had experienced a rough landing as he was no longer moving. I’m not exactly sure what might have caused his death, but I’m quite convinced it could not be blamed on poor vision.

The eyes of a dragonfly take up almost their entire head which allows them to have 360-degree vision so they can look in all directions at once. To put it in perspective, if you were a dragonfly, your eyes would be the size of football helmets! They can also see ultraviolet and polarized light and have binocular vision so they can judge distances well.

If only our spiritual vision was this advanced! That is God’s deep desire for us, so He provided the very best tool…His Word. He wants us to glean as much knowledge and wisdom from it as we possibly can by spending time reading, meditating, and memorizing it. The more we have hidden the treasures of His Word in our heart, the better our spiritual vision to be able to see how to live life in a way that brings abundant blessing to us and others while pleasing and glorifying God.

I have treasured Your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against You. Psalm 119:11

Right now, the Taliban is going door to door in Afghanistan killing any Christian who has a Bible app on their phone. When I heard this, I immediately thought how important it is to have God’s Word memorized. If you have spent time immersing yourself in it, it is hidden in your heart. And the best part is that the Holy Spirit will help bring Scripture back to your mind whenever you need it most.

With all we are seeing going on in the world right now, it can be very easy to give in to fear. Everything is completely unpredictable with natural disasters off the chart, rumors of wars, new variants of pestilence, threats of lockdowns, shortages, inflation, and on it goes. I could easily be prone to fear. But for me, one of the greatest blessings of reading God’s Word diligently is that I am getting to know my Savior intimately. This has created a stronger faith inside me which has lead to total trust in Him. I know that I have nothing to fear because I know who He is.

His Word has taught me how much He loves me, cares deeply for me, and desires the very best for me. He has never left me or let me down and His love is unconditional. There is nothing that can separate me from His love! At the same time, He is also all-powerful and in complete control. He knows the end from the beginning and none of what is happening in this world is a shock to Him. In fact, He is allowing it to usher in His soon return so He can make all things new. We should not be surprised by any of it if we are reading His Word because this has all been prophesied on the pages of the Bible to happen as we get close to the end of the age. Having spiritual vision gives us understanding for the times we are living in so we do not have to fear. We know how it turns out!

God knew this race we are running at this time would feel strenuous and require great perseverence. The ancient Greek word for race is agón meaning “conflict” or “struggle.” It definitely feels that way! To help us get to the finish line, He has told us to keep our eyes on Him and not on all the chaos surrounding us.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:1b-2a

How do we keep our eyes on Jesus? It begins by admitting you are a sinner in need of a Savior and can never be “good enough” to save yourself. It is by grace alone you are saved through faith in Christ. The penalty of sin is death, but Jesus Christ died in your place so that you could be made righteous before Him to be able to be in His presence in eternity. His gift to you is eternal life if you simply believe.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Romans 10:9-10

To keep your eyes on Him, know God’s Word because He is the Word! You can know Him intimately the more time you spend slowly soaking in His truth. He is a personal God and wants more than anything to have a personal relationship with you because He loves you.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

God’s Word is a gift to us. It’s the very best tool for learning how to keep our eyes fixed and focused on Him as we grow in our knowledge, wisdom, faith, and trust in our Savior who loves us beyond comprehension.

The next time you see a dragonfly, may it be a reminder to you to treasure God’s Word in your heart so you can experience the many blessings of 360-degree spiritual vision!
