Living in Reverent Awe | October 12th, 2021

I stood awestruck for several minutes as I watched the giant waves crashing with all their might against the rocks in Curacao at Boka Pistol Bay. There was such a powerful force behind them creating a breathtaking site to behold!

The awe I felt reminded me of the reverent fear we are to have for our Creator and Almighty God. Now, it was an impersonal sense of awe I experienced with the crashing waves. But the kind we can have with God is very personal when we have a right relationship with Him, living in a way that reflects His majesty and holiness.

“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.” Revelation 4:11

The closer we are in relationship with Him, the more we recognize who God is and how worthy He is of our admiration and obedience without compromise. You may think that if you fear God He will seem more distant to you, but it’s actually just the opposite. The more you learn of His character and respond with reverent fear of Him as the all-powerful, all-knowing God that He is, the more you experience intimacy with Him because that is the kind of person to whom He draws near!

The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant. Psalm 25:14

I’ve noticed that the more I dwell on how powerful and perfect God is in all His ways, simply being in awe of Him, the more I trust Him and desire to obey Him with everything in me. His ways are so much higher than mine! He has proved that over and over. The intimacy of our relationship has become sweeter and I find myself wanting to please Him in all I do. Just the thought of His mighty power makes me feel so completely safe and secure with Him!

God’s Word tells us: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

A wise person has a reverent fear of the Lord and loves to honor Him with their actions. But a fool despises God’s instruction and cannot be told how to live their life. They want to do it their way because they think they know best, even when it clearly goes against God’s Word. It doesn’t take long to discover how very wrong we are about thinking we know best when we remove God from the picture. Just look at how our society has turned out now that we have removed God and His perfect laws from everything!

A way of understanding how to fear God is by being God-centered. Your life completely revolves around Him. He is your foundation for everything! You have a continual awareness of Him in all aspects of your life, a deep reverence for Him, and a commitment to obey Him. Your choices are pleasing to Him and they align beautifully with Scripture.

Being in awe of God brings so much blessing! The Old and New Testament of the Bible are filled with incredible illustrations of how God used His power in miraculous ways to mercifully rescue and abundantly provide for those who feared Him. And He is the very same today.

God is the source of all wisdom, so if you want wisdom you must spend time with Him. The more you read His Word, the more wisdom and understanding you gain for how to live your life in a way that honors Him. If the path of your life is to go in the right direction, you must make decisions that are based upon God’s approval, not your own. If you ignore Him, you will end up making a mess of your life, guaranteed. There is no true wisdom in this world without God. It does not exist.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

God reveals himself in spectacular ways through his Word and all around us in His creation. Take time to be in His presence each day by reading His Word, sharing your heart with Him, and giving Him gratitude and praise for who He is. May we live each day in reverent awe of Him so we can beautifully reflect His power, majesty, wisdom, and holiness. He is worthy!
