Growing in Godly Wisdom | May 14th, 2021
There is nothing more exhilarating than being in the great outdoors in nature no matter where you are in the world. Exploring Maine several summers ago made all of my senses come alive as I spent time boating on the lake, walking along the beach, hiking in the woods, and strolling through stunning flower gardens.
On my walk through one of the gardens, I found myself surrounded by the most beautiful moss in every shade of green. This fascinating, spongy plant thrives when undisturbed in damp, shady places. It felt so peaceful there, I didn’t want to leave! It seemed like the most perfect, restful place for spending quiet time with the Lord.

When I think about the people I know who are filled with godly wisdom, they all seem to have one thing in common. They spend daily, quality time with God in their “quiet place.”
The time they give to Him is not a just few hurried minutes. Instead, they bask in His presence truly seeking Him each day. They know what an awesome privilege it is! During this time, they glean all they can from reading God’s special love letter to them in His Word. It’s like digging for gold as they discover the nuggets of wisdom for living a godly life. True gold diggers!
Oh, the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! Romans 11:33
They are not weighed down with anxiety about the past because they know they are forgiven. They are not weighed down with worry about the present because they know who provides for their every need, protects them fiercely, and carries their heavy burdens. And they are not weighed down with fear of the future because their eternity is sealed by the One who loves them so much He gave His life so they would never be separated from Him.
Quiet time with God has greatly increased their biblical knowledge and understanding which increases their wisdom to discern truth from lies, right from wrong, good from evil in this corrupt world where everything has been turned around. They avoid so much unnecessary pain and heartache by refraining from making poor choices from lack of knowledge. Spending time in God’s presence strengthens them in their weakness for holy living.
I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Psalm 119:15-16
They also know God’s heart the closer they are drawn to Him. They understand what makes Him grieve, become angry, or feel joy. And they experience it with Him. They deeply grieve for those who don’t know the love of Jesus. They are angry when they observe the choices people make to disobey God, hurting themselves and others. And they feel joy when they see people healed from brokenness when they surrender their lives to Him. Simply stated, their heart aligns with His.
With wisdom comes humility and a teachable spirit. The more time we spend with God, the more He reveals where change needs to take place within our own heart. We begin to crave righteous living, detesting the sin we see in us and around us. Humility allows God to mold us into His perfect image to be used by Him in the most significant, purpose-filled ways to bring Him glory.
Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. Psalm 25:8-9
Like moss that grows best undisturbed, growing in godly wisdom comes from spending consistent, undisturbed time with the Lord in a restful, quiet place. It’s a place where all of our senses come alive in anticipation of being in the presence of our loving, Almighty God.
